See this plan →What separates the plans
Plan names in Spain are commercial labels. They are useful for talking about a product, but they are not a definition of what the cover does, and reading them in order — Essential Health, Complete Health, Complete Health Plus — tells you almost nothing about which one belongs in your life.
What actually separates the plans is a small number of design decisions. Each plan answers those decisions differently, and once you know which answers suit you, the plan chooses itself.
The four decisions that place you
Do you want to pay a small amount each time you use care, or nothing at all? This is the copayment decision, and it is the first fork on the path. A copayment structure lowers what you pay each month and adds a fee at the point of use; a no-copayment structure removes the fees and raises the monthly cost. Neither is better value in the abstract — it depends entirely on how much healthcare your household actually generates. Our guide on copayments and no-copayment cover sets out the break-even logic in full.
How far do you want the cover to stretch? Every policy has edges: things it does not cover, limits on how much of something you can have in a year, and treatments that need approval before they go ahead. A broader plan pushes those edges further out. Whether that is worth paying for depends on how close you expect to get to them, which is a question about your health and your temperament rather than about the product. Start with what private health insurance covers in Spain, then read about annual limits and exclusions.
Does the cover have to work outside Spain? Most plans are built around a network of hospitals, clinics and doctors in Spain. A different design pays you back for treatment you have arranged and paid for yourself, which is what makes cover beyond Spain possible. The two designs feel completely different in daily use — reimbursement or medical network explains why.
Whose lives does it have to fit? A household with young children, an applicant in their late sixties and a single professional are not solving the same problem. Children generate frequent, unpredictable visits; older applicants care about whether cover will still be there in fifteen years; a single professional often cares most about how quickly they can see a specialist. The plans below are grouped around those realities.
What your quotation adds
These pages explain what each plan is for. Your personalised quotation adds the specifics: prepared for your ages, your province and your household, it names the plan, what it covers, what it costs, what you would pay at the point of use, which hospitals you could use, and when each part of the cover becomes available. Exact benefits are confirmed in your personalised quotation, and you read it before you apply for anything.
If none of this is your question yet
Three other starting points may serve you better. If you are not yet sure how private cover works in Spain at all — how you book, what the card does, who authorises what — read how private health insurance works first; it takes about ten minutes and makes everything on this page easier. If you want the assessment method rather than the range, how to judge one Spanish policy against another sets out the factors that actually separate them. And if the language is the obstacle, the health insurance glossary translates the Spanish terms you will meet on any policy document.
What your personalised quote confirms
- Which plans are available to you at your age, in your province, for your household
- The price of each plan for the people you want covered
- The copayment position on every plan you are shown, and what it means in use
- The hospitals, clinics and specialists you would have access to near you
- The waiting periods that apply before each part of the cover can be used
- How your medical history has been treated, and anything it changes
- The optional benefits you can add, and what each one costs
Questions people ask about this plan
How many plans will I actually be shown?
Only the ones you can hold. Age, province, household and medical history all narrow the field, so a quote for a couple in their thirties in Valencia and a quote for someone joining in their late sixties will not look the same. Your quote sets out what is available to you rather than what exists in general.
Can I change plan later?
Moving between levels is a normal part of a renewal conversation, and plenty of people start at one level and move once they know how much private care they actually use. What a change means for waiting periods and for cover you have already built up depends on the plan and is confirmed before anything is altered.
Do the plan names mean the same thing everywhere?
No. Plan names in Spain are commercial labels, not defined cover levels, and the same word can mean different things on different products. That is why every page here explains the decision the plan represents and leaves the specifics to your quote, where they are tied to a named product.
Is one plan better than the others?
No, and any page telling you otherwise is guessing about your life. The right plan depends on how often you use healthcare, what you want the cover to reach, who is on the policy and where you need it to work. That is a matter of fit, not ranking.
